Increased efficiency when tracking components through barcode system

Case Study

2018

A successful collaboration between Imexx Pty Ltd and Engineering researchers has resulted in the implementation of a barcode system to track components through the various work phases, ensuring that the components are installed in the exact location assigned in the drawings.

Idea

The team set out to show that using barcodes over manual reading to track panels throughout various work phases, would result in increased productivity.

Approach

Each panel is given a barcode at the shop drawing stage, and using a barcode reader in the factory, the information such as size and type of panels will be compared with that provided in the hard copy of drawings.

Outcome

Using a barcode system, it will be possible to track the panels through the various work phases, and will ensure the panels are installed in the exact location assigned in the drawings. The results of this study can be used by different contractors in the construction industry to manage the work process and to reduce the wastage and time to complete each project.
